Students in the Culinary Zone at Evangeline Reimagine Academy recently received a hands-on lesson in essential kitchen skills during a knife demonstration led by Chef Terryl Jackson. The event was organized by Culinary Zone instructor Chef Darious Ceasar, who invited Chef Jackson to share his expertise and provide students with an engaging, real-world learning experience. The interactive session introduced students to knife anatomy, the functions of different types of knives, and the importance of using color-coded cutting boards to prevent cross-contamination.
Chef Jackson walked students through the uses of key kitchen tools, including the chef’s knife and paring knife, emphasizing proper grip, control, and handling. Students then put their knowledge to the test in a lab simulation, where they practiced two classic cuts on onions—julienne and large dice—and also worked with bell peppers to refine their technique.
In addition to cutting skills, the lesson included crucial instruction on knife safety, sanitation, and clean-up procedures—important habits for maintaining a professional kitchen environment.
The demonstration was a valuable experience, equipping students with foundational culinary skills they’ll carry with them throughout their training and careers.
